On Wednesday, February 23 at 4pm, a coalition of justice groups gathered at the Evergreen College campus in Tacoma (1210 6th Ave) to unveil a Black History Month project a year in the making – a three-foot tall bust honoring pioneering climate scientist Dr. Warren Washington. The coalition commissioned Black artist Aisha Harrison, who spent the last year working on it.

As the second African-American to earn a doctorate in the atmospheric sciences, Dr. Washington has served as a role model for generations of young researchers from varied backgrounds. He has been a recipient of many prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Science presented by President Obama. Now retired in Colorado, he is honored to have this bust made by our community.

If we continue to burn fossil fuels “we will see an increase in temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations and other greenhouse gasses, causing a rise in sea levels, thawing of permafrost, as well as an increase in climate extremes,” said Dr. Washington during a recent speech, highlighting the need to take action.

The event was be emceed by community leader Les Pogue and featured the sculptor Aisha Harrison, Dean Arunga of Evergreen College Tacoma, Nakanee Monique reading a poem, and even some of Dr. Washington’s family.

This project was a joint effort by The Conversation, The New Generation 2.0, BAD, The Black Panther Party of Tacoma, South Sound Anti-racist Project, Lawyers Against Systemic Racism and 350 Tacoma. Many members of the community donated time and money to make this possible.

“Aisha Harrison blew us away with her creativity and skill on this project and we’re so excited to share this with the community and honor Dr. Washington,” said 350 Tacoma volunteer Janeen Provazek.

The sculpture will stay at Evergreen for about a month and then start traveling around Tacoma, with stays at Campfire Coffee, Parable, and more planned. It will also go to the Black History Month event on Feb 26 from 12pm-4pm at the People’s Community Center in Hilltop.

People are encouraged to visit Dr. Washington throughout his travels, take a selfie, and share online with #WheresWarrenWA.
